Life in the Frame: A Photographer’s Journey to the Isles of Scilly

Ah — the Isles of Scilly. A small, windswept archipelago set 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall, yet it feels a world away. There’s something about these islands that defies description — a pace of life that’s slower, quieter, and more connected. As an Isles of Scilly lifestyle photographer, it’s a dream setting. But even as a visitor, you feel it the moment you arrive.

Getting there is part of the adventure: either a two-hour-and-forty-five-minute ferry across the Celtic Sea or a short but unforgettable flight in an eight- or sixteen-seater plane from Land’s End Airport — a charming, tiny airport that feels very in-keeping with the Isles of Scilly!

Once your feet hit the sand, the stillness hits you too. You begin to notice the rhythm of island life: the golf carts trundling by, the hum of Island Transport vans greeting newcomers, and the boats gently ‘tripping’ visitors between each island. For a lifestyle photographer like me, it’s a living mood board.

Although this trip was a holiday for me and Cat — my other half, better known as Saxophonique, and occasional second shooter/BTS chief here at Pickering Street Studios — I couldn’t resist packing my photography gear. The Isles of Scilly offered the perfect setting to explore the core of what we do: capturing moments as they happen and telling visual stories with honesty and atmosphere.

From windswept vineyards to wild coastal trails, I set out not just as a traveller, but as an Isles of Scilly photographer intent on documenting the little things that make a place feel alive. Even in stills, lifestyle and product photography can evoke movement, emotion, and connection — and that’s exactly what I aimed to bring home.

Why the Isles of Scilly?

We’ve been visiting the Isles of Scilly since I was young – maybe 11 or 12 – and we went religiously every year up until I was about 17, when I decided it was cooler to practice guitar and pretend to be a rockstar. But the islands’ rugged coastlines, huge variety of wildlife and plant life, and the charm of island living eventually drew me back two years ago when I took Cat on a surprise adventure for her first trip to this magical place.

The Isles of Scilly have a distinctive, unusual weather pattern due to their proximity to the end of the Gulf Stream. As a photographer, this gives you a wide variety of light to work with – clouds can be burnt away to reveal brilliant sunshine, or roll in suddenly and change the entire mood. You never quite know what’s going to happen with the weather, and that unpredictability is a gift. It keeps you sharp from a technical perspective, and opens up a rich palette of colours, tones and textures to work with.

For any Isles of Scilly lifestyle photographer, that kind of diversity is gold.

Behind the Lens: What We Look For in Lifestyle Photography

All that unpredictability makes the Isles of Scilly the perfect place to embrace the unscripted.

You don’t always know what’s going to unfold in front of your lens, and you have to be prepared to respond in the moment – whether that’s a fleeting streak of golden light, a red squirrel darting through the Abbey Gardens, or a fisherman cutting across the horizon just as the sky changes colour.

That’s exactly what we’re looking for at Pickering Street Studios when it comes to lifestyle photography. We aim to capture the raw and the real – those moments that haven’t been over-directed or forced into shape. There’s a certain kind of magic in imperfection, and a sense of storytelling in spontaneity that staged photos just can’t match.
